We'll be meeting again on Saturday, June 1, 1:00–4:00 at the NEW Slice & Dice Pizzeria location at 2225 Wyoming Boulevard NE, Suite C in Albuquerque (just south of Wyoming and Menaul).  Join us for some food and drink and some much-needed catching up. Share what you've been working on or just socialize. Stay the whole time or just stop by to say hi. We'll begin with a board meeting — all are welcome — when we'll be discussing Comic Book and Creator Showcase (July 20-21), Moriarty Mini Comic Convention Vol. 6 (August 3), Bubonicon (August 23-25), Atomicon (August 31), 24 Hour Comics Day (October 5-6), upcoming educational offerings, and plans for the rest of the year.

How Comics Animate Culture

Take a look at activism through the lens of comics!  In Truth, Justice, and the American: How Comics Animate Culture comics offer up a mirror of our fears and beliefs.  We see this in the stories told in comics, the struggles of creators, issues within the industry, and times when comics have stepped beyond the realm of comics to direct activism.  Join 7000 BC's Jeff Benham in an exploration of how comics have questioned, wriggled, and brawled their way to become an active force in the evolution of our culture.

Delight as the limits of creativity are shattered!  Escape with the unexpected monsters of our dreams!  Thrill as the Captains of America tackle the Axis!  Tremble as Congress contemplates comics' delinquency!  Raise a fist as The Man pulls comics underground!  Celebrate as comics unloose the broad American voice!  Squirm as comics struggle to define "created equal!"    Look!  Up in the Sky!  It's not a bird!  It's not a plane!  It's comics fighting for us all!  (And we don't always agree!)

This presentation was originally created for the New Mexico Humanities Council / National Endowment for the Humanities' United We Stand speaker series.  It's being presented here for the Albuquerque Science Fiction Society, and is also open to the general public.  Cost is $1 for newcomers.  There will also be a Q & A, and attendees are entered into a free raffle!

THE ACTIVITY ROOM is at the west end of the church by the gated courtyard BUT the gate is locked at 5:00 pm.  So, enter through the church's north door (backside of building) off the parking lot.  Once in hallway, turn to your right to enter the Activity Room.  Doors open at 7:15 pm - not before then (we have to set up)!  Plan accordingly.  Orderly guests are welcome.  Lidded & bottled non-alcoholic drinks are permissible.  Everyone gets shooed out around 9:50 pm in order to clean up...

 

MASKING IS WELCOME:  Sad to say, but Covid, the Flu & RSV are here to stay.  Be safe.  Whether you wear a mask or not is up to your personal comfort level.  We're just asking everyone to be well and respect people around you.

UPDATE!  PLEASE READ!

Jeff Smith is recuperating from a cardiac arrest suffered on August 13th.  The Cartoon Books team has announced that all of Jeff's in-person appearances for the year have been cancelled.  However, because he will be attending via Zoom, this event has not yet been changed.  They are waiting for a bit to see how Jeff is doing and if he feels up to it.

If Jeff cancels, we will still have an event at DATA Charter School on Saturday, September 16th.  The new event will be an interview with Stephen McCranie (Space Boy, Mal and Chad), who was planned to be Jeff's interviewer.  We will still have the interview with Jeff at a later date, when his health allows.

Best known for the self-published comic book series Bone, multi-award winning Jeff Smith is one of the most popular cartoonists in the world.  His engaging comics storytelling can now be seen exploring the dawn of humanity in Tuki!

Jeff will be interviewed by New Mexico's own Stephen McCranie.  Stephen is the cartoonist behind Space Boy, one of the top sci-fi webcomics in the world!

A Comics Lecture and Workshop
Monsters have controlled the evolution of comics.  What have we wrought? Did you know monsters have controlled the evolution of comics?  Independent comic book creators from 7000 BC will guide you through a who's who of the monsters in, around, and behind comics over the past century, revealing how their presence has shaped the comics industry.  Then we'll jump in with pen in hand, wrestle your personal creative demons, pin 'em to the page, and give them a stern talking to about who makes the comics in this relationship.

Exploring the psychological, emotional, and physical effects of a good story, found on the bread aisle. Explore the essence of what makes comics unique!

Atomicon is returning Saturday, August 5th, and they're seeking vendors and gallery artists!  
 

VENDORS!
The deadline to apply has been extended to July 1, 2023!

This is a great opportunity to sell your wares.  They had over 1500 attendees last year!
The rules are simple:
• Tables are FREE.
• You can only sell items that you personally had a hand in.
• If you don't have a business license, you must sign up with the county for a one-day vendor's license. (They can walk you through the process.) UPDATE!!!  Vendors do not need a business license if they are not selling food and if they sell in Los Alamos County fewer than three times per year across all venues.

The deadline to apply to Artomicon in the Step Up Gallery is July 1, 2023!

The gallery show will run July 13th to August 5th.
• All ages may apply.
• All work must be original.
• Any media is welcome, 2D or 3D.
• 2D pieces must be hang ready.
• You may submit up to 5 pieces.
• All sales will be through the artist.  The library will post contact information.
• There is NO COST to submit art to the exhibition.
• Artwork must be delivered to the Step Up Gallery on Friday, July 7 from 1pm to 5:30pm or Saturday, July 8th from 10am to 2pm. Please have your name, title of art and phone number written on the back of all submitted art. (If you cannot deliver artwork on these dates, contact Jeff.)
